Ask the Stress Doc -- Q & A

1. Temp Anxiety and Harassment

Q. I've been unemployed for 4 months. I got a job this week, supposed to be temp to perm thru an agency. I have a lot of stress because I've been let go on other similar situations after the assured me it was temp to perm. I am afraid of Fridays. That's when they call you and let you know (you are not going) back to that job. I dont sleep well, I have an upset stomach all the time just waiting for the 90 days probation to pass by. On top of all this, the guy that's training me for the position thinks down on women and is always making trash comments. I already complained but I think is not cool because that can get me in trouble; so I take it. Help !!

A. You definitely are in an "on the edge" situation. Uncertainty combined with a feeling of being out of control is the stress pits. Here are some situations: 1) Try joining a support group at a place such as The Women's Center in Vienna, VA. Not only will this help general stress levels, but you may get support regarding the noxious guy training you. Just taking abuse will definitely undrmine your self-worth and contribute to stress symptoms. If you've experienced several of these probations you are understandably battle fatigued. Also, doesn't sound like the company responded to your complaint. Did you go to HR? If the comapny has an Employee Assistance Program (EAP; counseling service as a company or agency benefit) that may provide an ally in finding out whether top management will address or ignore the problem.

2) For the interim, I would consider a consult with a psychiatrist to see if short-term medication would be useful in helping you sleep and quieting the upset stomach. When it comes to anxiety or mood disorders, I much prefer people consult with the experts in psychopharmacology.

3) Start a regular exercise regimen. When everything feels uncertain, brisk walking, jogging, swimming, aerobics/dancing, etc., for 30-40 minutes, 3-5 times/week provides a tangible sense of accomplishment and control. And finally,

4) Maybe you should get training elsewhere. One shouldn't have to take meds to survive a hostile environment. Sometimes legal action is also necessary.
